Ephesians: Week 18

What does it truly mean to honor the people who raised us, and how does that posture of honor shape the way we relate to God? This message digs into Ephesians 6:1-4, where Paul calls children to obey and honor their parents, and unpacks why those two words are not the same thing. Obedience and honor each carry their own weight, and together they form a foundation that reaches far beyond childhood. The passage does not come with an expiration date. Whether we are raising toddlers or navigating relationships with aging parents, the call to honor remains. We are also reminded that Jesus himself, fully God and infinitely wise, chose to submit to his earthly parents as described in Luke 2:39-52. If the Son of God could walk in that kind of humility, there is something profound for all of us to learn from it. The message does not shy away from the reality that many of us carry complicated histories with our families. But it holds out a genuine hope: we do not have to repeat broken cycles. God fills the gaps left by imperfect parenting, and it is never too late to start walking a different path. For parents, the charge is equally clear. Discipline rooted in love, consistency without moving the goalposts, and a life that puts love on visible display are the tools that point children toward a God worth obeying.
