Ephesians: Week 17

What does it really mean to love sacrificially? In this message drawn from Ephesians 5, we explore one of the most countercultural commands in all of Scripture: husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church. When we understand the culture this letter was written into, the weight of that command becomes staggering. Women in that world were not expected to be cherished, pursued, or treated as precious. So when Paul writes that a husband should love his wife the way Christ gave himself up for the church, it was nothing short of revolutionary. And it still is. The central truth we are invited to sit with is this: love in a marriage is not contingent on how well the other person performs their role. Just as Christ's love for us is not based on our performance, a husband's love for his wife is not a reward she earns. It is a posture he chooses. This passage points us back to Genesis, to the original design, and reminds us that the mystery of two becoming one is ultimately a picture of Christ and the church. When a marriage reflects that kind of selfless, serving, sacrificial love, it becomes a living illustration of the gospel itself. That is not a small thing. That is everything.
